History of Von Ngari Monastery, Manali

Dating its history back to the 15th century, the Von Ngari Monastery was established by the second Dalai Lama in the year 1524 in Tibet to spread peace and harmony among the people. In the beginning, to start the monastery, he took the help of 50 youngsters and gave them admission as a primary batch of the monk community. As all the youths were from the Ngari area, the monastery was named as Ngari Monastery.

Later, after many years, many youths from different regions got their admission done to this monastery to grow to be monks. Slowly and steadily, the monastery grew to more than 400 people and the second Dalai Lama looked after all of the youths as a father to them. He devoted all his life to teaching people about the learnings of Buddha Dharma all around the world and that’s how we got Von Ngari Monastery in Manali.
