History of Manu Temple, Old Manali

The Manu Temple has an interesting tale attached to it. According to a legend, Manu, one day, while washing his hands in a river, found a small carp fish who asked him to rescue it. Soon, after that, he placed the fish into a bowl filled with water. The size of the fish suddenly increased. Seeing this, he decided to transfer the fish to another bigger bowl. However, the size kept on increasing like anything. Later, Manu decided to put it back in the river; but of no use. This time also, the fish expanded to a size that even the river couldn’t accommodate. He was left with no options other than transferring it to an ocean and eventually, he did the same to save its life.

Once the fish was in an ocean, it changed its appearance and transformed into Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu then informed Manu about the flood that would end everything on the planet. Hearing this, he decided to build a boat for his family members and also took 9 different species of birds, animals, and seeds along with him. After the situation came under control, he landed back and started meditating. It is said that the place where the temple is proudly standing today is the place where he used to meditate. After that, Manu became famous as Sage.
